Working a scene

When approaching a scene for  landscape photos, it pays to keep an open mind and try the possibilities. It is important to have an artistic vision for the photo and be a bit ruthless in looking for a part of the scene that is true to that vision. Very rarely is the first setup location the best spot to capture the required vision. Unfortunately, humans by nature can be a lazy bunch, so the photographer has to be diligent and be prepared to move around or “work the scene” in order to make a photo that has impact on the viewer. Working the scene may involve wholesale changes to your location, angle or lens choice, or it may be as subtle as tilt to the camera...

Location Guide – Hat Head National Park (Northern NSW)

With long sweeping beaches and rocky headlands, Hat Head National Park is an area of natural beauty that is bound to excite any photographer. The park is situated halfway between Brisbane and Sydney (about 6 hours travel from either), near the town of Kempsey. One of the central features within the park is the Smoky Cape Lighthouse built in 1891. Both the lighthouse and its...

Crystal Castle is nestled in the foothills behind Mullimbimby in Northern NSW and is a wonderfully different location for photography. As a photographer it will take you no time to lose yourself in the gardens with a superb collection of flowering plants mixed with rainforest walks. Following some of the paths throughout the property you start to encounter some of the many surprises that are sprinkled throughout the gardens. These surprises in the form of statues pose their own...

One of my favourite Images – Redwood Path #2

In this blog post I would like to take a moment and tell you about one of my favourite images – “Redwood Path #2”. This is an image I captured in a Californian Redwood Forest on the Great Ocean road in Victoria.  The Californian Redwood trees (also known as Sequoia trees) were planted in 1939 and provide a fascinatingly different forest from what many of us are used to. A short distance from Apollo Bay this forest is a great place to wander and explore, it holds numerous wonderful paths that will lead you interesting scenes for you to photograph.  I found the opportunity to photograph this forest when I did a weekend trip to doing some exploration of...
